5 Tips to Help You Prepare for a Virtual Interview

When coronavirus impacts your job search, there’s no time to procrastinate. Jump in with both feet by prepping for your first virtual interview. To learn the best ways to execute a successful remote interview, follow Job Store Staffing’s top five tips to help job seekers land the job.

1. Check Your Surroundings

Your setting for a virtual interview is critical. Believe it or not, your surroundings can make or break a first impression. Clear your space and make sure you give off a professional vibe. No dirty plates, inappropriate wall art, or otherwise unsavory things in the background.

2. Dress for Success

Professionalism is key in the way you look as well! While you may be sporting a quarantine beard or applying less makeup, you still need to present yourself as you would at work. A clean, unwrinkled shirt or blouse is needed, as well as tidy hair. Sweatpants? Probably okay.

3. Virtual Etiquette

If you’re new to meetings via Skype, Zoom, or Webex, you may need a crash course. Try to save your thoughts to avoid interrupting, keep yourself on mute if you’re not speaking, and utilize the in-meeting chat function to relay messages to the group or privately to individuals.

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

To assert yourself as a quality candidate, rehearse your responses. Create a two-minute pitch of why they should bring you in, especially during trying times. A quick search engine scan will show you what questions you should expect during your job interview. Consider doing a peer interview or calling a friend to brush up on your communication abilities.

5. Follow-Up

In a digital age, you may be wondering if mailing a post-interview thank you card is still necessary. The sentiment is still alive and well. You must follow your virtual interview up with an email thanking the hiring manager for their time. If you interviewed with multiple points of contact, try to relay this message to everyone to show your appreciation. A small amount of thoughtfulness may put you ahead of another candidate.
