Temp-to-Hire or Direct Hire – Which Should You Choose?

Filling an open position can be a difficult and time-consuming process. Of course, you don’t have to handle the process yourself. Instead of hiring a candidate directly, you can retain a staffing agency to fill the position for you. A temp-to-hire solution is viable for many open positions, but sometimes a direct hire is the better option. Understanding when to use each staffing solution will save your company time and money while ensuring your organization hires the most qualified candidates.

Temporary-to-Hire Staffing Solution

One of the obvious reasons for using the temp-to-hire staffing solution is that you are able to determine if the candidate is a good fit for your organization. If you hire a candidate directly and the employee doesn’t work out, you have to go through the process of finding reasonable grounds to fire the person. Whereas with a temp-to-hire candidate, they understand they aren’t an employee of the organization and the contract will be cancelled if the company isn’t happy with their performance.
The try-before-you-buy concept isn’t the only reason a temporary hire is the preferable staffing solution. If an employee leaves the company unexpectedly, you may need to find someone to fill the position quickly. You may not have the ability to wait while an ad is placed, candidates are interviewed and the new employee is trained. An employment agency is able to help you fill a position faster because they have a database of qualified candidates they can go to in order to fill contracts.
This database of candidates is also beneficial when you create a new position and you aren’t sure of the review process. For example, a content manager is a new type of position and many companies aren’t sure which candidates have the skills needed to be successful in this position. A staffing agency will be able to help create a list of necessary skill sets, job history and interview questions for this unique position. The organization will then have time to decide how this new position fits within the company and if the position will need to be permanent or seasonal.

Direct Hire Solution

A staffing agency can also help you find a candidate who will become a permanent member of your organization without a trial period. The direct hire solution is advantageous when you are in a competitive candidate market and the prospect of being hired directly with your company can set you apart, even if you do not have the time or resources to recruit.  It also can be ideal when you are in need of skills that are tough to find or in high demand. Outsourcing human resources duties to a staffing agency is a good way to reduce company costs while ensuring you fill open positions with qualified candidates.
