It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed in the job-search process. After a while, all the applications, deadlines, and contact information can start to blend together.

Staying organized is crucial to ensuring you get the most out of the process.  Here are a few tips to help you stay organized during your job search.

  1. Set out your goals. At the beginning of the job search process, it is important that you carefully lay out both your short and long-term goals.  Make a list of the specific field and type of job you want.  Beyond that, make a timeline with specific dates and benchmarks you want to hit, such as sending a certain number of applications out every week. Having a detailed plan at the outset will help you stay focused and organized when the applications start piling up later.
  2.  Make lists. Making detailed lists is key to staying organized throughout the application process.  Create a spreadsheet that includes the applications you have sent out, the deadlines for each, any interview requests, and the people you have been in contact with. Also make a list of companies and people you plan to reach out to, and their contact information.
  3. Keep track of your documents. By the end of the job search process, you will have a pile of applications, resumes, cover letters, and other forms.  It’s easy to lose track of which document goes with which job, or worse, to send the wrong resume or cover letter to a prospective job. It is important you keep track of these documents throughout the process. Carefully label each document with the name, date, description, and the particular job it is for.  Make separate folders for each job you apply for, and keep all the documents associated with that application together.
  4. Budget your time. Finally, make sure you budget your time appropriately throughout the job search process.  The constant filling out of applications and sending emails can easily get overwhelming if you try to do much at once.  Instead, set aside a little bit of time each week, and don’t get too bogged down in any one task.
